2022 CSA Farm Update: Week 13

On Sunday afternoon, the skies darkened while the wind started moving the treetops. Slowly the clouds became more and more dense. For certain, we were in the presence of an impending rain. Would it be one of the short downpours which comes down in torrents and leaves in a flash or would it be a large front moving through bringing us a steady supply of rain? I am not sure if all people think about these things, but as a diversified vegetable farmer whose work entails being able to work the soil in some form or fashion for nearly 30 weeks out of the year, I ponder the occurrence of upcoming weather. Anyhow, the rain has been falling slowly and steadily for two days now and looks to continue until sometime early Wednesday morning. This will surely put an end to most fieldwork other than harvest this week, but it also means that those fall vegetables are taking a well-deserved drink

A couple of years ago a friend presented me a gift of seeds from Thailand. They were packaged in an unobtrusive brown paper envelope labeled “roselle.” I wondered what I could do with these seeds. I had never heard of roselle before, there were no seed catalogs in which I had come across with this seed. I did some research and found out that it was also known as hibiscus or jamaica. This is an herb that does not generally grow in the Northeast. In fact, I have never met anyone who has grown this culinary delight. Many people are familiar with hibiscus flower that is used in tea or made into agua fresca, but not many people are familiar with the citrus flavor that it will add to your culinary dishes. If you can think of a sorrel, sour cherry flavor, but in a large leaf, you will have an idea of this herb. We offer this addition to the share this week as a bit of a challenge. Recently, I became aware of a study that 90% of our daily thoughts are the same mullings day in and day out. Our hope is to inspire you to think outside of your comfort zone for just a little bit and enjoy a local flavor that you may have never experienced.

Until next time,
Farmer Jon
