2022 CSA Farm Update: Week 14

This past week has brought us and our neighbors much needed rain. Several inches fell over 3 days, soaking into the dry ground and replenishing roots. I am always amazed at how we can run an irrigation pump day after day, move hoses and sprinklers all over the farm, and only provide a fraction of the water that will fall from the sky in a good rain.

The rains also have brought a change in the weather. Nights are now consistently falling into the 50’s and days are in the 80’s which is a sharp contrast to what the last few months have been upstate. You will also notice some of the vegetables in the CSA bags changing with the season. The tomatoes, peppers and eggplants are slowly fading away and making room for our fall crops. This week brings the return of salad radishes which are the harbingers of more fall brassicas. Kale, sweet salad turnips, and broccoli are just around the corner, growing ever sweeter as the days grow more mild. The season is far from over as we get ready to bring in our butternut and kabocha squashes this week as well as more fingerling and yellow potatoes. Sweet potato harvest is also just around the corner. The plants look great this year and have even attracted some very intelligent deer who are somehow getting through our deer fence or swimming across the irrigation pond in order to enjoy an early morning snack of sweet potato leaves. Luckily it is only two and not a whole herd!

Until next time,
Farmer Jon
