2022 CSA Farm Update: Week 12

We did receive a few heavy downpours last week, which certainly helped. The cole crops have not been in favor of the hot dry weather and are showing their stress, but more moderate weather seems on the horizon. Radishes, sweet salad turnips, broccoli, and kale will slowly start to make their way back into the shares. Those heat loving summer vegetables will slowly fade into a distant memory. In the meantime, they are in ample production, so enjoy them to their upmost. Delicata squash also makes an early appearance this year because of the drier weather. They are very sweet and delicious from all of the summer sun.

As the last unofficial week of summer comes to an end, we say goodbye to two of our crew members as they return to school. These young men just completed their second summer on the farm with flying colors. Day in and day out they showed up ready to work and learn in any and all conditions. Pouring rain or sweltering sun did not deter their work or their spirits. They were also able to work and learn the craft alongside their abuelito, abuelita, tia and madre. This is quite a different experience than looking on YouTube for gardening tips; this is knowledge and experience that has been carried and honed for decades and passed on by beloved family members. Will these young men make a career in agriculture? Who is to say, but the skills and pride in one’s work is something that will carry them through anything in life. Christopher and Ricardo, we wish you much success in the coming school year and give our thanks for all of your work!

Until next time,
Farmer Jon
