2022 CSA Farm Update: Week 15

This week brings us to the Autumnal Equinox in our year. After a summer of extreme heat and dryness, the feeling that a point of balance is ahead brings a breath of fresh air. Those expansive growing days of summer will come to a close, while we begin the harvest of all that the summer sun has brought to us.

Those crops are many, but the first one ready for harvest this past week was our winter squash. Row after row of fruits were clipped from their vines, set in the sun briefly and brought in our greenhouse for further curing. After about two weeks, the skins will harden, the flavor will mellow, and they will make their way into your bags. We did have about 20% crop loss from deer and woodchucks who made their way down the rows nibbling one squash after another, but all in all it was a good harvest.

This week will bring celery into your CSA shares. When most people think of celery, they think of the large stalks filled and a mild celery flavor. This year’s celery is a bit more compact, but carries such an aromatic flavor that will add so much to any dish. It is one of those flavors that seems to bring all those other flavors where they need to be. For me it is a real treat to have farm grown celery. We hope you enjoy it.

Until next time,
Farmer Jon
