2022 CSA Farm Update: Week 16

We have some returning fall crops that will be in the shares this week including kale, purple salad radishes, and butternut squash. The nights on the farm have begun to steadily dip into the 40 degree range, which makes many fall crops that much sweeter and more colorful. With nights getting chilly, that also means we need to harvest those remaining crops that will not tolerate a frost. The crops to be harvested this coming week will be sweet potatoes and potatoes. While a good frost will make some vegetables all the better, sweet potatoes and potatoes will be rendered into very expensive cover crops if they are touched by it. The weather seems to look dry for the coming days ahead which will allow us to get into the fields and harvest on time.

Frost is a tricky phenomenon to explain working with. In the spring, we have to be mindful not to plant certain crops too early because they will not survive. In those first months of planting, patience is much more of a virtue than rushing to get crops planted. A tomato plant tickled with the ice cold air will never come to fruition. Now we are at the other point in our growing year where will and perseverance are the best ways to work with impending frost. Frost is akin to a work deadline that one has no idea of the date. It could be tomorrow, next week, or next month. It also has about a 7 week window of its arrival from year to year. When it arrives, the work better be done, there are no extensions! We certainly thank our lucky stars as the weather has held out for us while we get ready to bring in more of this year’s harvest.

Until next time,
Farmer Jon
