2022 CSA Farm Update: Week 9
It has been another hot week on the farm with steady temperatures in the 90’s. Rain has been intermittent usually arriving in strong 30-60 minute downpours. Nothing is perfect, but his would be akin to trying to drink one’s daily water intake in a couple of gulps. Most of it will not end up in it’s intended destination!
On a brighter note, we will have a couple of Katchkie first time appearances this this week in the CSA share. One is sweet corn, which is one of those crops which seems to call every known mammal within a two mile radius. That includes, deer, crows, raccoons, foxes, skunks, and farm children! They all have their own way of leaving the ears and plants to let us know that it has already been picked. Some will vey daintily make their way down into the husk leaving only a handful of kernels lefts on an otherwise intact plant. Some will pounce on the whole plant, brining it down to the grounds in order to get to their sweet treat. Others will very skillfully take an ear off the plant peel back the husk, enjoy the kernels and leave a pile of empty cobs in the field! All in all, rest assured that there will be some left for us too.
Potatoes are another crop that have made their first appearance on the farm. There are several different kinds growing this year ranging from all red, multi colored, deep purple, and standard yellow. Unearthing the potato is something that never loses its joy. Above the ground there is a plant that has withered, which tells us that the potatoes are ready, but just a few inches below the ground lies the colorful, oblong treasures with their earthy aroma and dusty skin, ready to be placed our baskets. Those first meals with potatoes fresh from the earth are extra special. There is a certain crispness that they have when cutting them up for cooking that is only around for the first few days after being dug. Their flavor also seems to carry just a hint of the summer sun as well. All these attributes mellow in storage, so enjoy them while you can.
Until next time,
Farmer Jon
