2021 CSA Farm Update: Week 8

Welcome everyone to week 8 of the Katchkie Farm CSA! On the farm, we have very much welcomed the drier weather in the past week. Field work is now mostly caught up, which is a huge relief! During the next 4 weeks, the final fall plantings will take place. Watermelon radish, lettuce heads, napa cabbage, sweet salad turnips, spinach and French breakfast radishes all have their final sowings for this year. Here in Columbia County the summer peaches, pears and first apples are just about ready. What does all this mean? August is here!

August is one of those months that truly brings to fruition what was started so long ago with cold air and snow still on the ground. In those months that seemed so long ago, all that could be had was the idea of what August could bring, but now we have in our hands what August can bring. The light is slowly changing to carry more of ripening quality. Which brings about those wonderful field tomatoes, juicy red peppers, and slowly starts to turn the butternut and delicata squash into those dense, sweet delights that will grace our plates in the coming months.

Apologies for the brevity this week, but the to do list on the farm is quite long. Our orange tractor is almost ready again as we wait for the arrival of the shipment of our new tire. Which means the workload is all on our back up tractor, which is quite a workhorse, but a little smaller and a little slower.

Until next time,
Farmer Jon
