2022 CSA Farm Update: Week 18

We have wonderful fall share this week, with the first arrival of our sweet potatoes, fall fennel, and the last of the peppers, among many other of our more familiar friends like kale, carrots, and garlic.

I came across another farms’ newsletter this week (yes, farmers enjoy reading about other farms in their spare time 😊) and they mentioned that they had finished up their potato harvest. Which from what I can gather is great cause for celebration in certain parts of the country. In the newsletter, there was also a link to a CBS Sunday Morning that aired back in the 1990’s which documented the potato harvest in Aroostook County in Maine. One of the main components of a successful harvest were the local school children. They were allowed several weeks off from school in order to work on the potato farms and pick potatoes. They were paid piecemeal by the amount of potato barrels they could fill in a day. Helping your local farm complete the harvest was a great source of pride for many of these children as well as a little income to put away for a rainy day.

I am not sure how many of you would want your entire years’ income riding on the task getting done by 12-year-olds, but it must have been a great sense of pride for the children to work together and bring in the harvest. This past weekend my two sons and I seeded several cover crops for the year. It was great fun to have them out there taking in all the colors of fall, the blue sky, the smell of the earth all while helping their dad. Just a few more years and they may be out there bringing in the harvest!

Until next time,
Farmer Jon
