Fried Heirloom Tomatoes; Sauteed Collard Greens with Fresh Herbs; Summer Salad with Garlic-Red Wine Vinaigrette
“After finding the heirloom tomato and collard greens in the CSA share, I was inspired to create a meal that reflected Southern-style cuisine and my own fondness for comfort food while maintaining a cosmopolitan sensibility by using fresh, healthy ingredients.
Over the years, I’ve taken over the reins from my mom when it comes to cooking for the holidays back home in Southern California; my family adores the Champagne Turkey, Cornbread Stuffing, and other holiday dishes I prepare. However, when I’m home in Brooklyn throughout the rest of the year, I seldom cook and I order out more often than I’d like to admit. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised at the end result of this meal, as this was my first attempt at cooking fried green tomatoes, a favorite indulgence of mine. This challenge ultimately inspired me to cook more often for myself by reminding me that I am more than capable of creating delicious meals, though I’ll probably do less frying in the future!”
